المَدُّ العَارِض لِلسُّكُون (ʿĀriḍ — Due to Stopping)¶
All 14 rāwīs: 2, 4, or 6 ḥarakāt (three options).
مَدُّ العِوَض (ʿIwaḍ — Compensatory)¶
Stopping on a word ending with tanwīn fatḥah — the tanwīn is replaced by a long /aa/. All 14 rāwīs: 2 ḥarakāt (natural/qaṣr). Waqf only — does not apply in waṣl.
مَدُّ البَدَل (Badal — Substitution)¶
Hamzah originally preceded the long vowel and was replaced/transformed (e.g., آمَنَ). All 14 Shāṭibiyyah rāwīs: 2 ḥarakāt. Note: Warsh reads madd al-badal with three lengths — 2, 4, or 6 ḥarakāt (commonly 4); the other six reciters read it as natural madd (2 ḥarakāt).
المَدُّ اللَّازِم (Lāzim — Obligatory)¶
All 14 rāwīs: 6 ḥarakāt (no variation).
مَدُّ اللِّين (Līn — Soft)¶
All 14 rāwīs: 2, 4, or 6 ḥarakāt when stopping.
